  • Nine cyclists and at least five pedestrians were killed by HGVs (preliminary estimate)

2000-10

TOTAL DEATHS

  • 242 people died in collision with lorries while walking or cycling in the period 2000-101
  • Twice as many pedestrians (160) have died as cyclists (82)
  • Though the number of pedestrians dying has broadly declined; that of cyclists has not.

CYCLISTS

  • One in 13 cyclists hit by a lorry will die, compared to one in 652 of those hit by a car2 -- lorry collisions are 50 times more dangerous
  • Women account for 35% of cycle trips3 and 33% of casualties: they are no more likely to be involved in an collision than men
  • When in a collision, women are twice as likely to die: one in eight women, one in 17 men
  • One child under 16 was killed on their bicycle in the period (from 40 hit)
  • Nearly 90% of deaths occurred at or near a junction
  • 55% of deaths occurred when lorries were making a left turn.

PEDESTRIANS

  • One in 8 pedestrians hit by a lorry died
  • This figure rises to one in 4 for those over 65, who account for nearly half (46%) of pedestrian deaths
  • Children (under 16) are less likely to be involved in a lorry collision (9% casualties; 20% of population)
  • Five children died in the period (one in 25 of those hit)
  • Pedestrians are mainly killed at junctions (74% of deaths).
