Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle MP said:

We have got to do more to prevent cyclists and pedestrians being killed or seriously injured on our roads and the See Me Save Me campaign is a vital contribution to saving lives. It should be a matter of huge concern that the number of cyclists and pedestrians being killed or seriously injured is again going up. It was reckless for the government to cut road safety budgets and funding for speed cameras while abolishing Cycling England and ending national targets to cut deaths and serious injuries on our roads. However, the really reckless decision was to allow longer HGVs on our roads when they are three times as likely to be involved in fatal collisions compared to all other vehicles. We need to see much greater focus on HGV safety technologies and do more to incentivise the transfer of goods from road to rail. And despite the importance of cycling proficiency and awareness, we must never give the impression that the responsibility to prevent collisions simply rests with cyclists.

Road Danger Reduction Forum President Lord Berkeley said:

As President of the Road Danger Reduction Forum I am happy to support your organisation and its work. It is plainly intolerable that lorries should be driven with their drivers being unable to see pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists in close proximity to them. Such vehicles should be regarded as "unfit for purpose" for use on our roads.

Of course, installing devices enabling lorry drivers to be aware of other road users around them is only the first step to reducing danger from such vehicles. Other technologies which can prevent human beings from going under the wheels of such vehicles need to be developed and installed on all such vehicles.

In addition, while highway engineering and the training of cyclists which makes them aware of good positioning near lorries are useful measures, we need to ensure that danger from lorries is reduced at source. Whatever technologies are employed on lorries, as long the use of these vehicles has the potential to inflict such horrific injuries and death, their drivers and operators must be held properly responsible.
